The Buso Carnival in Mohacs, Hungary
Winter isn't quite over yet but the Buso Carnival in Mohacs, southern Hungary, kicked off anyway on February 21, 2012. The six-day event marks the end of winter and allows villagers to party and revel prior to the beginning of Lent. During the celebration, men wear costumes made of sheep wool and wooden masks to continue a 16th century tradition where villagers wore similar costumes in an attempt to scare off the occupying Turks of the Ottoman Empire. A black coffin is also paraded through town to symbolize the death of winter as the signs of Spring blossom in the coming months.
