Dragobete: The Romanian Valentine’s Day
In Romania, Dragobete is the Romanian equivalent of Valentine's Day where lovers express their sentiments to each other and often make symbolic engagements for their eventual nuptials. Dragobete is celebrated on February 24 and this year, hundreds of lovers in Bucharest participated in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the longest love letter in the world. In the photos below, contributors scribble some words of affection on a board to help the cause. The Guinness World record attempt runs until 10PM, Romania time.

Vapor trail heart over Zhokovskiy, Moscow
Stunt pilots flying Russian Sukhoi jets at the annual International Aviation and Space Salon air show in Zhokovskiy, Moscow, scribed a heart with an arrow piercing through it with contrails on February 14, 2012. Photographer Maria Mashkova captured three jets as they carved the cloudy heart in the sky. Mashkova said, "It was unexpected, suddenly two jets drew a heart in the sky above our heads. And the third jet flew through the heart like an arrow. I have only been photographing for a year and I was really pleased with the results of the photograph. Love was in the air you could say, and I am still amazed by the skill of those pilots."

A flash mob organized by a television station in Stavropol, Russia, saw couples kissing and cavorting for Valentine's day on February 13, 2012. The red helium-filled, heart-shaped balloons added to the love and romance. Sort of.
