Monarch butterflies overwintering in Oyamel Forest

Every year in November and December, thousands of Monarch butterflies flock to the Oyamel Forest in central Mexico to spend the winter in a state of hibernation. The canopy cover of the forest and the nearby streams maintain a delicate homeostasis which provides enough moisture to keep butterflies saturated in the near-freezing air. When Spring arrives, the creatures emerge from their torpor and take wing to their appointed destinations where they'll feast on nectar, breed, and continue the circle of Monarch life.
