Hunting snakeheads in south Florida
Jason Calvert (left) and Dan Bieniek of JC's Custom Baits located in Texas, fish the waters of a canal in Weston, south Florida, for snakehead fish which are native to Asia and Africa. Snakeheads are feared because they can decimate local fish populations thanks to their voracious appetite and the ability to spawn thousands of offspring five times a year. In Asia, snakeheads are a food source and fishermen in Florida have also targeted the fish for the dinner plate.

Family of elks wander into Moscow neighborhood

Vandals cause loneliness at the Lodz Zoo
A male Rothschild giraffe named 'Tofik' living in the confines of the Lodz Zoo in Lodz, Poland, found himself all alone after two of his female companions died over the weekend. Vandals broke into the zoo on Saturday after closing hours and threw rubbish bins and benches near the animal enclosures and caused the two female giraffes to die - Suri of stress and a heart attack while Hana died from stress while being treated for parasites. The zoo is now searching for another companion for Tofik and a reward of 5,000 zlotys (US$1457) has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the vandals.

Obese orangutan at the Ragunan Zoo
An orangutan which has been described as 'obese' wallows in a pond at the Ragunan Zoo in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Indonesia. The easy availability of food and the lack of exertion on the part of the orangutan to find food has led to its unhealthy physical condition.
